Kombynation Co.'s Grinty Rosemelon was created to serve as reminder the importance of stopping to smell the roses once in awhile, or better yet, savouring it. As you sip along you'll taste watermelon, which is actually both a fruit and a vegetable and then a hint of grapefruit, known as one of the seven wonders of Barbados, instantly transporting you to the sandy shores of the Caribbean islands. Lastly, the lingering notes of the fresh mint put you in a relaxed state even when the notorious weather in Singapore heats up the streets.

On top of the wholesome benefits of kombucha and the wide variety of gut-health boosting properties it offers, kombucha infused with grapefruits and watermelon respectively confer the following added benefits:

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)

Named after a Jamaican farmer observed how the fruit grows in grape-like clusters, grapefruit has been found to have

  • Antiosteoporosis properties by one of the bioactive furanocoumarin compounds, bergapten [1]
  • Increased carbohydrate metabolism, antioxidant defences and reduces bad LDL-cholesterol which is commonly associated to heart diseases [2]

 

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus)

The watermelon is a true 'zero-waste' fruit as both the fleshy red part and the rind can be eaten, just like any other melon. The white flesh nearest to the rind contains a valuable amino acid Citrulline [3] and even the seeds are high in protein, magnesium, vitamin B [4]. As for the main red fleshy part we eat, the riper the watermelon is, the higher its levels of lycopene which could help in 

  • Regulation of cholesterol level which leads to a reduction in arterial stiffness and the size of atherosclerotic plaque [5]
  • Absorption of ultra-violet (UV) radiation which can eliminate UV-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are responsible for mutations in the DNA, leading to cancer [6]
